Bud Ekins and Steve McQueen early morning at the start of a motorcycle enduro In California.
Steve is wearing a Baracuta G9 Harrington- very unusual for a motorcycle race! Bud is wearing a wax cotton Barbour. Both have on Bell RT Jet helmets, Bud's with his '63 ISDT color scheme. Steve's wearing his favorite good luck helmet, pin-striped by Bud's shophand Von Dutch.

During Bud's trips to England in the 1950s, he became great friends with the Rickman brothers Don and Derek while racing on the European motocross circuit. They entered into a business partnership where Bud would import the lightweight advanced Rickman racing chassis kits for the growing California desert racing scene.
.
.
Bud would build Triumph, Matchless and BSA engine-equipped Rickmans for eager customers, including Steve McQueen. There was a period article in one of the 1960s motorcycle magazines featuring Bud building what would be Steve's personal Rickman Triumph. (Search it out- it's a great read).

At race end, Bud and Steve (and Susie) with their trophies. Taking First and Third place.
.
Bud has flipped his t-shirt inside-out for the photo as it's heavily oil, grease and mud-stained. He's wearing his wax-cotton ISDT '63 Barbour trousers. Steve has paired his Baracuta jacket with Bates leather racing jeans. Steve gave his trophy to little Susie that day as a gift. They are now both in the Johnson Motors memorabilia collection.

Bud's all-time favorite photograph, taken by William Claxton, of Bud sharing a beer with his best friend Steve in the quiet after the race. The two friends would load their bikes into the back of the Ekins shop truck early morning every weekend. On Any Sunday.

This is the stuff of dreams and legend.
